1 year+ after katrina

this area still isn't recovered, and isn't completely functioning. you don't usually notice it, but you can tell when you realize half the restauraunts aren't open to the usual times, if they're open at all, the 24hr walmart is only open till 10, *and* said walmart is so understaffed that the tire and lube dept can't do both tires and oil changes on the same day. (although what really burns me is that they don't have signs up to that effect, anywhere, you just go in and take your chances.)

you can also tell when driving on some of the back roads. even though they look much improved even since march, they still look trashed.

in other news:

been having trouble sleeping lately. last night, 1/2 perc + alcohal, and still little sleep. got some kind of sniffles, but i'm not sure if it's a cold or allergies. i promised gleann abhann diamond i'd be at crown this weekend, but at this rate, i may be sleeping instead. and i actually would like to go, as it would be neat to see the fighters.

i have decided i am ADD when it comes to stitching. i have a half-dozen BAPs already started, and last night i started separating thread for a needlepoint i bought the other day.

i'm not sure what to call it when it comes to my fanfic interests...

Didn't realize you were also a SCAdian, as well as Fannish. Cool. Watch the sleep potions, they can bite you in the ass. And take care.

yeah, i see you on sca-chiurgeon's list every once in a while, which gives me that weird 'hey, i know that guy!' thrill, heh.

i'm being careful with the potions. actually, the perc did work a little bit, because i've been having this continuous pounding headache thing for a while, and the perc took care of that. alcohal usually makes me sleepy, and it doesn't usually take much - the drink last night was only 5% - but i'm not sure why that didn't work.

maybe the stress is doing weird things to me. i have a table coming in, supposed to go to crown, and teach a heraldry class on (gasp!) tuesday. eek!

::hugs:: thank you :)

Well, whenever people complain about how long it is taking to clean up and repair New Orleans, I ask them how long did it take to rebuild Berlin, Dresden, London and most other European cities after WW2. New Orleans has always been one of the poorest cities in the country, and most of it was effectively destroyed in a day or 2. You throw in the construction and supply difficulties inherent with a city in a swamp, and I think they are doing remarkably well.

i think so, too. it's just frustrating to wait for it to come back. but also, i think people outside of katrina-land aren't always aware of how long it *does* take - it's not really in the news anymore, you know? they've moved on to newer and shinier disasters.

I guess I have the perspective of:
1. Actually paying atention to history.
2. Seen how long it took a town to rebuild after a major tornado, which is nowhere near as destructive.

That being said, I do think NO needs to pay attention to some of the rebuilding advice and what other places devastated by hurricanes have do to protect themselves.
