three things make a post

I think i can get 5 things into here...
1) I've been watching Game of Thrones lately, and I do have to say it's beautifully done, andwho can forget *that map*?
but - and you knew there'd be a but, didn't you? - it's kind of like watching the worst reality show ever... with dragons. Every single family I've come across so far is really dysfunctional, except for the Starks, and even they have their problems. and also, even for HBO, the entire series has so much gratuitous sex in it, if you were playing a drinking game, you'd have been plastered by the end of the first episode. It's a little unreal.
And aside from the fact that the noble families appear to have a cruder vocabulary than the peasants, there's also the fact that between the plot, the author, and the producers - i think someone really hates women. it's difficult to tell if it's a plot point, or a result of what the producers decided would work, or something intrinsic to the mindset of the author. given that the story is set in a semi-feudal fantasy with all sorts power struggles going on, it may have been a conscious choice to showcase the general mindset of the characters.
it's not just that Joffrey's a psychotic serial killer. it's not just that political marriages are the rule of the day - that part i understand, it's how things are done when the majority of the population are illiterate and tied to the lands via farming and herding. it's how the majority of sex scenes are *only* or mostly doggie-style. it's how the one guy in the north marries all his daughters. it's how Robb Stark can't trade Jaime Lannister for 'only two girls' or his bannermen will revolt. it's how Theon Greyjoy, supposedly brought up to be an honorable man, doesn't just hit on every woman he comes across, but actively feels up the lady giving him a ride to Iron Isle Castle like she's just another whore. this is a woman he just met, obviously of 'good breeding'.... and he feels comfortable treating her like he she's just a place to stick his d*ck?
any one of those things would be ok, but all of them together just add up to... apparently women are completely worthless to someone. And it just feels off that it should be the society of Westeros itself. controlling women, yes, because by controlling them the inheritance rights are secured. between that and the amount of education the noble-born ladies seem to get, the signaling that female = worthless seems *really* off.
with all that said, i really like watching GoT... of course, it's kind of like watching a train crash...
2) so... i've been working on a commission embroidery piece for a friend. Pictures here: http://boogieshoes.livejournal.com/pics/catalog/7088 I *loved* working on this piece. I couldn't put it down. 80 hours and a lot of new-to-me stitches later, i had a finished piece that i really liked the effect of. I especially liked the bird wings - i did those with buttonhole bars. most people seem to like the sheep, which is something like 400 french knots. I also like mr. scott's hair, which is a blended needle, done in bullion knots. *really* effective. and you can see *vast* improvement in my split stitch from left (mr scott) to right (noble lord guy). lot of fun, looking to do more of this in the future.
3)i've also been watching outlander. i'm sort of miffed that they sold 'season 1 volume 1' and now i need volume 2 to finish the season... because, of course, Jaime and Claire are in a sticky situation at the last ep in volume 1. This is a series i recommend watching. Another cable channel series, another series based on books. the cast and crew are *fantastic*, research for costuming is bloody amazing. there's a lot of political stuff going on in there, and it helps to have at least a small foundation of history between England and Scotland, but it's not necessary. beautiful, beautiful scenery of Scotland.
and that's my drama lately.
