so, life is returning to normal after the move, and christmas, and... just everything.  i went out to re-arrange my storage unit and found my fireplace from overstock.com had evidently arrived some time this week.  they didn't call me to tell me this, but instead just stuck it in my storage unit.  probably, they put a note in my mailbox, which i haven't checked yet. :-p

i'm glad it's here, but it was a bit of a surprise.  after i wrestled the boxes in - i didn't realize i was going to have put it together, but i have the tools, so no big deal - it took maybe 20 min to re-do the storage shed the i wanted it.  is good now.

i went shopping yesterday, and ended up buying some chayote squash, which i've never tried before, zuccini squash, an acorn squash, and some um... turnips .  i think.  i can't remember, but they're white with purple on top, and root veggies.  i've got a theory that i'm going to learn how to cook these things.... yeah, i laughed at myself too.  in truth, after the minor fiasco of the Revel gingerbread cookies, i ended up with 3 packs of stick-butter, and i need to do something with it.  i figure i can do a lot of sauteeing this month, and i have rice... and grits.... so...

work ended this week with a day and a half of searching for an equation that ended up being found on a website for high school physics students.  i had to laugh - i had 3 heat transfer/ thermodynamics textbooks on my table, and 3 engineers couldn't find the right equation because none of the books went back to something that simple.

so... that's where i'm at.  i'm getting ready to start writing fanfic again - certainly the muse is waking up and stretching - and i'm hoping to get back there by the end of this month.  my current theory is that fanfiction will occur on fridays, sat, and/or sundays, because i'll be too tired the rest of the week.  but we'll see how things work out.

White spheroids with purple tops = turnips. Since A. and I are doing low-carb, they're my usual substitute for potatoes. The Giant didn't have any, yesterday, so I settled for a single, 1-1/2 lb yellow turnip aka rutabaga.

Turnips. steam them and serve as a side dish to whatever. My wife makes a cold appetizer with slices of turnip, smoked salmon and capers.

Also all of what you say you've bought will make a good warming soup. A bit of garlic and ginger may help spice it up if you want.

Squash you can definitely saute - if you dipped them in batter you'd have a classic Japanese Tempura dish
