wait, what?

i woke up this morning listening to 'The Final Countdown', bemused that waking up t 5.30 ack emma doesn't phase me all that much anymore.  and then i tuned into the lyrics: 'we're half-way to Venus; it's light-years away... it's the final count-down!'

and my first thought was 'no it's not!  Venus is a few light-minutes at most!'  for those not in the know, light-years (-mins, -secs, etc) are a measure of distance.  1 light-year is the distance light travels in 1 Earth-standard year.  for a comparison, Earth is only 8 light-minutes away from the Sol.  this means all the light we see from the sun is 8 minutes old.   so i'm sitting there getting my grumbly-dork on, and my very next thought is 'well, at least they aren't making the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs!'

so i got up, and went to look for my god jewelry thinking it would be nice to dress up for work today.  it took me a while to find it, because i'd carefully put it away where it wouldn't get damaged and covered with gunk.... and then i listened to it rumble outside and decided 'eh, maybe not.'  (co-worker T says winter rain isn't that bad compared to summer rain - it's pouring now and looks like 6pm instead of 8am...)

got myself together, and went to get mail in case i had more bills.  no more bills, but i had 2 Christmas cards returned - one to a cousin, and one to a friend.  i'm amused that i now have accurate snail mail addresses for a couple celebs, but not for my cousins or friends!

at any rate, i wanted to update everybody on the state of my health, since i had a routine doctor's visit yesterday.  i like new!doctor.  old!doctor wasn't bad, but new!doctor is much better.  it was routine, getting to know you stuff, she asked a goodly amount of questions and listened to my explanations.  she gently chided me for avoiding paps and mammograms for 6 yrs, and gave me the names of a couple guys she trusted.  i decided to go with male obgyns this time to ensure someone would be with me during the exam who could hold my hand while i tried not to freak out (i was raped when i was 7, and obgyn exams bring up all the bad memories, and for added phobic factor, take place while you're in an impossible-to-defend-yourself position).  she even said 'you don't have to go tomorrow to get an exam, but really, think about it, because it's an important part of your health, and i don't want to see you get cancer and not know till it's too late.'  (which i doubt will happen, but i also know is the most important reason to go.  and it is important.  i just hate-hate-hate it.)

she also gave me an EKG, because of high blood pressure/hypertension.  this doctor's theory is that if something happens down the line with the heart, it's good to have a patient baseline to compare things to, not just an average baseline - which as we know, is the least helpful thing ever, if you're a unique individual, like we all are.  the reading from the EKG is: i have a heart, and it beats.  this is good, because when the nurse was taking my blood pressure earlier, she couldn't find any.  fortunately, i'm officially not a zombie. *wink*.

in actuality, BP was 110/82 - yay!  didn't get a look at pulse rate, official weight is 268.  nervous eating, i know, which since i'm not jobless anymore should subside.  hopefully, i can lose the 5lbs i gained due to nervous eating plus the 4 pounds of holiday cheer pretty quickly.  i'm back to healthy snacks and stuff - helps when you have good foods available, and aren't in the middle of a move!

doc was also all about adding exercise to my regime, and i told her i liked swimming and had planned on swimming at the complex during spring/ summer/ and fall.  she responded by telling me about local pool complexes i should check out, so i can also swim in the winter months - yay doc!  i'm hoping to find an indoor waterpark here, so which will be a big motivation to go.  plus, getting back to the point where i'm doing my wii.

we discussed bloodwork, and i mentioned how sensitive mine seemed to be what i ate, and she said that does indicate some glucose or insulin resistance, so... def keep an eye on that.

but all in, it's been a good couple of days.

Been a while since I listened to Final Countdown, but does it actually state that the departure point is Earth? If they're leaving Alpha Centauri for Venus, that'd be lightyears, right?

it would be! 16light-years, in fact. it would also be the closest star to Sol ;)

the answer is... i don't know what the lyrics say, and i would have to google it. and am too lazy to do so tonight.

hmmm... looks like i misread the Wiki page. they gave the distance in both parsecs and light years, and i thought the number in the parenthesis was the lightyears. but evidently not.

If you really want to be snotty about it (and I do), it's a metaphorical reference to something being *a really long time away*, technologically. And at the rate our space programs keep being castrated... they're correct. It is light-years away before we reach Venus.

:-pppppppppppp

So there.
