i just got a call from a recruiter looking for a mechanical engineer, designing specialty (i'm more analytical), for a 6 mos contract.  with my old employer. 

yes, *that* employer, the one that eliminated my position in July.

Firing someone, and then re-hiring them as a contractor at a higher wage rate, doesn't cut costs. But it does shift them from one budget line to another. And that's important, as it moves from Manager A's budget to Manager B's budget.

Yes, the corporation is an institution designed in medieval times. This is like the old raids for cattle and slaves, except they're shifting expenses instead of assets.
