so, this morning, right before our day started, one of our older coworkers, S., managed to tumble down the stairs.

this lady is a 68-yr-old corker, and no mistake.  she's a grandmother, and mothers a lot of us, and was in the army as a nurse for a bit when she was younger, and was on the shop floor at our company before she moved to the tech data dept.  and when i say 'shop floor', i don't mean she was picking out defective buttons - she was handling heavy materials and using those heavy tools and stuff to cut it.  strong lady. her medical issues to date: replaced her knees and on cholesterol meds, fairly normal for a 68 yr old woman.

so... she falls down the steps, and feels just fine, so she wants to get right back up.  C., one of our admins, is wife to a retired firefighter and is yelling at her *not to move*, because it's been drilled into her for 30 years that this is the correct procedure - don't let someone who took a header like this fall.  S. is one of our first responders... she should know this... and she's like 'oh, i'm all right, let me get to work!'  *facepalm*

anyway, we called the paramedics, make her stay still, and they come over, check her out, and convince her to go to the hospital and get checked out just in case.  and i'm figuring she's ok because she's joking and has said several times she doesn't feel like anything's wrong, but ok, she'll go get checked out. so, C. goes with her to the hospital - which is conveniantly across the street - and comes back.

the rest of us have a meeting (whole dept meeting), and we come back downstairs at around 8.30.  we're doing the usual post-meeting nattering, and in walks S.  *with presents* for all those who hung around and peered concernedly at her for the 5 min between fall and the paramedics getting her on the gurney.  she's fine, no cracked or even bruised bones, and is only letting someone carry her things because said person insists.

we're all, 'oh, S, you gave us a heart attack!  thank goodness you're all right!  you sure are gonna have a sore butt and muscles tomorrow!'

her response?  'i'm going *dancing* (at the company holiday party) tomorrow!'

C. is sitting there going 'wow.  i want to have her bones when i'm her age!' i told the guy who sits behind me we're gonna have to start calling her Wolverine, because obviously, she comes equipped with an adamantium skeleton!

EDIT:  *and* she picked up the young-kid paramedic to take him dancing with her!  i love this old lady, she's *so* awesome!

-bs, who also wants a skeleton like S.'s when she gets old.

OMG, she's actually more awesome than Wolvie. I... didn't think that was possible.
