Speaking of household organization software, there's a program I use to manage our library which is based on modules. The standard modules are software, movies, music, images and books, but you can modify or create your own modules. It's open source and free, and called DataCrow, in case you're not strictly looking for something ready-made: http://datacrow.net/
And speaking of catalogs, are you planning to make your own card catalog? If so, I'm interested in how it turns out.
