2011 Lesson's Learned
I'm instituting a new tradition, that I sort of did last year, anyway. Basically, at the beginning of the year, I do a To-Do List that I try to complete that year, and I decided it would be nice to do a Lesson's Learned for that list at the end of each year. This is the first official version of that post, for the 2011 To-Do List.
The Garden!
Evidently, I can't leave gardening alone, because while I said I wasn't going to do anything, I went and bought 3 little plants for the porch. And then I let the hot sun in summer abuse the heck out of them and eventually they died. I also understand the meaning of 'weed vine' - I've watched a vine from across the way attack my porch no less than 3 times this year, and that's coming back from some fairly aggressive whacking and trimming by the local maintenance crew. Lessons Learned: 1) gardening is love, and I'm not resisting it ever. 2) Drip irrigation that's programmable is your friend in the Deep South. 3) Weed vines will be burned out and nuked from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
Cross-stitch:
1) Finish up the basket for Tegan
2) In rotation:
a) Tiger
b) Mag7 doggies
c) Cardinals
d) Sylvia's towel
e)12 11, of the freebie stitches from the magazines
So I did finish the basket top for Tegan, and I will put up a picture somewhat later of this accomplishment. I stitched exactly one of the freebie stitches from the magazines, and I'm not sure where it went, so I don't know if I got it finished. Not on the list, I also stitched 4 baskets (sewing not stitching, but contributed to a lot of things not being done); 3 baby bibs, with one more to go; 1 shawl (more sewing); 1 out of 36 ornaments I told myself I'd do for Christmas.
Lesson Learned: I'm fricking distractable, and I really ought to focus a bit more. At any rate, most of these items have rolled over to the new To-Do List for 2012. I've added finishing up the ornaments, and the last baby bib to the new list.
Fandom Activities:
1) I still... have those two essays on writing to finish!
2) Finish Seventh Gift
3) See if I can't make progress on the TS cross-over
4) Upload stories to Dreamwidth, and AO3
5) Start Projects on:
a) LB!JD is actually a girl
b) Alternate Ending to 'Something Wicked'
6) Finish alternate ending tale for the Little Match Girl story
I got nothing. Instead of crossing of things, I added 7 slice-of-life stories, of which I finished one and then got stalled out on, and started a Highlander!7AU which has 2 more stories in my brain wanting out... and is apparently a kink-fest of mega-proportions which I'm sort of... embarrassed to relase into the wild. Major problem in getting these done is that I don't have a real good writing desk handy, and I hate writing at my laptop. This will hopefully change when I get into my house, but I'm not sure it'll make a difference.
Personal Admin:
1) Get Files off 1st old Laptop
2) Sort those files and store
3) Get files off 2nd old Laptop
4) Sort those files and store
5) Save 100% of house-buying and closing costs
I've save 2/3 of the downpayment I want to save before buying the house. I'm at a point where I need to put together the sort of research which will limit the areas I'm looking at and narrow the houses. I also need to spend some time actually driving around and looking at places which may or may not be something I do well. I have about 6mos, I'm estimating, before getting my house, but I need to concentrate on that the first half of the year to do it right.
Haven't done any of the computer admin, and again, I think it's primarily because I don't have a real good place to work on it. It should still be easy, but...
Wood-working/ Furniture/ House stuff:
1) Finish that silly chair!
a) make cushion
b) make two matching wood sides
c) staple fabric to chair top
d) on bottom, use wooden-bead trim to finish
2) Take apart Dad's furniture
3) Possibly buy
a) computer desk kit
i. hello shocks for car!
b) night-stand kit
c) Desktop computer
i. hello shocks for car!
d) electric fireplace
*need to put it together
e) Ott-lite for stitching
Lessons Learned: shocks are expensive! I still need to finish the chair cushion, which has been waiting on my floor for a bit because I'm terrified of screwing it up - expensive fabric is expensive.
Health:
1) Swim during spring/summer/fall (frequency TBD)
2) Keep eye on weight, with goal of losing 1lb/week
3) Post-ankle, try to exercise 30min each week
I managed to lose fifteen pounds this year, and then gained 7 of them back. I did fairly well at the beginning of the year, then starting mid-year, I fell down because I allowed 'trying to get stuff done for friends' to overtake 'taking care of myself'. I need to do better, if only because my knees and back and ankle will feel better if I can lose a bit of weight. However, Lesson Learned here is: Prioritize losing weight and taking care of myself. I really can't afford to let this one go, if only for health reasons.
SCA stuff:
1) One complete set of calligraphied awards for Barony
2) One complete set of calligraphied awards for Gleann Abhann
3) finish sewing the burgundy t-tunic dress
4) finish sewing the over-dress for that t-tunic dress
5) bead over-dress
6) get in touch with Mobile Group/ Barony of Osprey
I continue to have problems getting any calligraphy done. For that reason, I've decided to try to make sure I've got a good nook and good table for calligraphy practice when I buy my house. That's mostly an equipment in the right area thing, but I think it's important moving forward. Never did finish sewing or beading the dresses - sewing isn't nearly as much fun for me a embroidery because it's a much more sticky process. I did get in touch with the Mobile SCA group, but I've pretty much decided to keep playing in Axemoor and Gleann Abhann. They're too close to say goodbye completely, and I love them.
