welcome to my brain, and a useful link

first up, yet another for the dream journal:
so last night, i dreamed that someone told me to read this great new fanfic piece they'd found. it was an artistic piece: a high school AU of Mag7 LB!AU, but done in the style of a Greek epic poem about heroes. in fact, all the mag7 characters, plus a few originals to fill out the cast, were matched up to a classical Greek hero. so i go to read it - and it's like i was sucked into being a cast member.
and i have to say, whoever wrote that fic in my dream was an effin' *master* of the craft. the characters' dialog was all in classical Greek Homeric style, and the school 'subjects' and 'classmates' were right in line with what you'd expect from Cheiron's Academy of Heroes. except that it was held in a modern building with lockers and everything. it was a boarding school; the students had dorm rooms.
in this AU, JD was Buck's little brother, and Vin was Chris's little brother. the dogs,Ringo and Elvis, were there as puppies; it was amusing. Josiah, Nate, and Ezra together with Chris and Buck were sleeping in one dorm room and formed a 'brotherhood of heroes', and
you got the sense they always intended to travel together. JD, Vin, and the dogs were in the dorm with the others, because Chris and Buck were the only family they had left, so it fell to them to take care of the kids. in addition, there were 4 female heroes, of a sort. Dawn, Eve, Destiny, and Aurora. (i was Aurora.)
the school was basically for rich kids/ upper class/ hero class. per standard classical times operating procedure, rich kids were the only ones who could afford to *be* in school, everyone else was busy working the fields or something. also per standard operating procedure, the kids were a bit wild and out of control. they had had a class on making or using magicked weapons, and the example weapons were made out of white clay ceramics. so in a fit of wild drunken debauchery, they decided every kid needed a weapon, and they 'practiced' on each other - by which i mean, they had real fights for the weapons and spilled a lot of blood in the process. there was this one spear, which, when thrust, always hit a flesh target, and the target always bled out. so in one courtyard, these two kids were wrestling over this great weapon, and the one who originally had it lost, and the other one grabbed the spear, point down, and pumped it in victory. 'i wouldn't do that,' said the loser - just as the winner speared his own foot with a minor scratch, which immediately led to his demise by blood loss. 'told you.'
each weapon was a blessing and a curse.
lots of partying, debauchery, wine flowing, orgies, etc., going on at the school. in the middle of this, Chris ticks someone off - it's never clear who. as a retaliation, this enemy steals Vin, and JD. the guys get JD back, but never find Vin. Chris is angry and despondent and actually, as a result of his fight with whoever-it-is, is kicked out of school. and not by the administration, but by the general feeling among the students that they'd be better off with him dead. the others decide to go with him, including the females.
the last two to leave are Buck, and myself. at one point, i ask Buck 'what's the plan?'
'we're leaving as soon as i do (x - not sure what this was, but i think it was sewing a seed of discord among our enemies or something).'
'all the lockers are cleaned out, even,' he says. i look - mine and his aren't cleaned out, so i take my half-full backpack, and stuff all the entertainment-reading books in it i can. i leave the 2 extra copies of the dictionary, and also, the textbooks. zip up the backpack, and Buck is striding out the door; i have to hurry to catch up. i walk out the door, catch a glimpse of him down the hallway in the crowd of students, and go after him. he goes into the computer classroom, which has two doors (both to the hallway), but when i enter, i can't find him. i go up and down the aisles - he's gone. i wander around the school campus for a bit, then go out on my own, adventuring, gaining experience, etc. i find out that the middle class has set up it's own warriors and heroes school, and the kids there are quite good at it.
years later, i run into Chris again. and we kiss. what can i say? the man is kissable. but he's had a serious growth spurt. in high school, he was only a couple inches taller than me - now he's shot up to be kareem abdul jabar to my mary lou retton. and some of the other guys come round to see what's up - they've all stayed with Chris all this time, except Buck. no one's seen him since high school. and they're all freakin' tall, too. 'it's almost time,' Chris says. he's close to getting his revenge.
a little bit later that day or week (time is strange in dreams), i run into Dawn, Eve, and Destiny. we laugh and gossip and catch up, and at one point, Dawn tells Eve that Buck 'bequeathed Aurora her virginity' (no, i don't know, either). and i say, 'well, i wouldn't phrase it like that, but basically, yeah.' we start talking about how Chris seems to be waiting for something to make his big move. and i say, he's waiting for destiny to send a sign.
and Destiny says, 'i don't believe in all that we are fated stuff. we do what we need to do, and that's it.'
but i've been studying the stars and old books. and i say, 'well, the legend says the hero will rise again after he's been stripped of his friends and lovers. would you like to know your fate?'
'what good will that do?'
'what harm will it do, if you don't believe in it?' so i tell them their fates according to the legends, in which each of the four of us wind up going off on our own for reasons of honor and getting killed in our last adventure. and then i say it makes perfect sense for this to be the time when Chris starts his revenge quest, because one of the things he needs to do it is the energy of sacrifice. 'we need to sacrifice ourself so that he has the power to incarnate as the Hero.'
but no one believes it, and we keep going, until we meet up with someone who abuses a woman right in front of us. Eve is angry, and the rest of us keep her from going right then - we need to talk to the guys, tell them where we're going, why, maybe get help. But Eve is so angry that she waits until we're distracted, then rides out on her own. and tracks her bad!guy to a geurilla encampment. she puts the bandits to the sword, but takes a fatal wound while doing so, and Chris shows up to the place the rest of us have been staying and asks what's wrong.
so now we know it's true. our destiny is to sacrifice oursevesf so Chris can level up to Hero. Dawn is up next, and she goes off on her quest without a word. Destiny is upset at her: 'fight it! we know what's coming, so we can avoid it!' Dawn replies, 'If it's my destiny, then i go to it with good heart, knowing my sacrifice is not for nothing.' off she goes.
then Destiny and i get our quests almost at the same time - i'm off to save some Christians from being unjustly abused (despite the fact that ancient greece is a few centuries before Christ...).
and of course we die, but still i see that Chris is finally ready to return to the land of High School, triumphantly conquering all of his enemies... as Jason reincarnate. the other guys are the Argonauts. Buck rejoins them just as they're launching the ship - but i never do see what happens to JD or Vin.
now, imagine all this being performed in Greek chitons and sashes with Homeric speeches full of weird metaphors and etc. and also, everyone's in sandals. and riding huge horses.
yeah, my brain is weird.
thing the second today, is an interesting news source for those into Native American stuffs:
http://indiancountrytodaymedianetwork.com/2011/08/code-talkers-have-served-the-military-well%E2%80%94and-often-secretly/
of course, the story i've linked to is interesting in it's own right, but it strikes me that this website is a good resource for getting a handle on modern-day issues and politics for Native Americans. good for expanding our collective horizons, as well as ATF!Vin background.
