ok, so i decided to do a compare contrast of 2011's and 2010's  To-Do Lists, which actually function as my 'goals/resolutions' for the year.  for some reason, it just works better for me to title it as a To-Do List as opposed to a List of New Year's Resolutions.  i think of resolutions as major changes in direction, and i'm content with where i'm going right now.  and i don't usually say 'Goals', because i tend to think of Goals in the long-term; instead, i have a list of items to do to achieve those goals.  planning, thy name is boogie.

anyway, this post is likely to be graphics heavy, because i like the table-thingy, so most of this will be under various cuts.  it may take me a couple tries to get all the lj-cuts to work, so don't freak out too soon, 'kay?

2011 is going to be a considerably lighter year than 2010 in terms of Things To Do.  take, for example, what's on the Garden List:

The Garden!

There is no Garden things on the to-do list.  I have no Garden this year.

1) Even so, I'm going to buy 2 6" plants.

so... yeah, you can that the loss of job i experienced (in July) this year kind of stopped all garden activity.  i found a new job which i started in November, and moved to Mobile, AL, to an apartment that has more interior room, but only a little patio outside.  i can stand empty plant stands, so i said i was going to buy two small plants this year for the two plant stands being stored outside.  these will be ornamentals, probably begonias.

the next section is the Cross-stitch list.

Stitching things To Do
20102011
 1) 1 of Alex's towels
 2) Magnificent 7 dogs by Sunset
 3) Cardinals for Mom
 4) Tiger Needlepoint.
 5) Stitch one of those silly little things that come with
the british stitching mags per month
1) Finish up the basket for Tegan
2) In rotation:
    a) Tiger
    b) Mag7 doggies
    c) Cardinals
    d) Sylvia's towel
    e) 12 of the freebie stitches from the magazines

stitching is one of my favorite hobbies.  it's easy to do and doesn't actually take up a lot of storage space until you become horribly addicted to owning stash, like me, and most of my buddies in ljcomm = cross_stitch.  because of this, the majority of this list hasn't changed.  'Sylvia's Towel' is the mate to 'Alex's Towel' from the 2010 list.  during my job search, i found it easier to stitch than to do my other major portable hobby, which is fandom-related writing.  in fact, all fandom-related writing went on hold.  it's like my brain said 'nope, you concentrate on the job search, then go back to fannish-ness'.  and now that i've got a new job, and am winding down 'household move chores', my muse has opened up the mental fic file drawer again.

the 'Mag 7 doggies' are still in rotation, because i've been stitching them 1 dog at a time, then going to the next project in the stitch list.  you can see i have the first dog ('Chris'), and the second dog ('Vin') done; the next one is 'Buck', a cute German Shepherd who needs a rose in his mouth and hearts in his eyes. :)

the '12 freebies' is still on the list not because i didn't get any done ( i finished 3), but because there's so darn many of the freebies.  yes, i've been subscribing to those British mags for a few years. *wry look*

on to the SCA stuff:

SCA Stuff
20102011
 1) One complete set of calligraphied awards for Barony
 2) One complete set of calligraphied awards for Gleann Abhann
 3) finish sewing the burgundy t-tunic dress
 4) finish sewing the over-dress for that t-tunic dress
 5) bead over-dress
 1) One complete set of calligraphied awards for Barony
 2) One complete set of calligraphied awards for Gleann Abhann
 3) finish sewing the burgundy t-tunic dress
 4) finish sewing the over-dress for that t-tunic dress
 5) bead over-dress
 6) get in touch with Mobile Group/ Barony of Osprey

i got nothing.  i made promises, and i failed to follow through.  hence... those awards are still on the list. *sheepish look*

fandom activities:

FanAc
20102011
 1) Characterization Meta
 2) Oomph-factor Meta
 3) Converging 'Verses Meta
 4) Beta'd version of Green Day
 5) Dunne's Darlins' Challenge story
 6) Pick one other story from the back-log to complete.(Seventh Gift Story)
 7) I wanna be a SEAL
 8) Fanfic is a respectable hobby
 9) Commentary on Disney's view of American history
1) I still... have those two essays on writing to finish!
2) Finish Seventh Gift
3) See if I can't make progress on the TS cross-over
4) Upload stories to Dreamwidth, and AO3
5) Start Projects on:
    a) LB!JD is actually a girl
    b) Alternate Ending to 'Something Wicked'
6) Finish alternate ending tale for the Little Match Girl story

yeah, remember what i said about suddenly drying up when i went into job-search mode?  guess where i was.  so now i need to go back and do those 2 metas left from 2010, and that will finish my set of 'what makes a good story from a reader's/ reccer's point of view'.  i believe i can finish the Seventh Gift stuff, and Mag 7.5 is the TS-Crossover being referred to here (hmmm, need to go back and link all those...).  uploading stories to various archives is a necessary part of fan-life, and hopefully, will spread my stories a bit farther.  i'm still poking at the AO3 archive to figure it out.  Items 5 are more planing and research than other things, although i actually want to finish Item 6.  i always hated that the Little Match Girl died in the end.

the next sections are broken out differently in 2011 than 2010 - the To Do List is an organic and constantly changing thing.

so, first, what counts as 'personal admin issues' in 2011:

Administration for home things
20102011
 4) Save 1/3 of house-buying and closing
costs expenses.

14) Finish re-organizing books downstairs.
1) Get Files off 1st old Laptop
2) Sort those files and store
3) Get files off 2nd old Laptop
4) Sort those files and store
5) Save 100% of house-buying and
  closing costs

it's not even on the menu in 2010, although it should have been - organizing and updating my computer files has been a back-burner project for a few years now, and it's become somewhat more urgent since i've had a second laptop crash, necessitating buy the machine i'm currently typing on a little earlier than i'd planned for.

the only thing in that rolled over is the closing cost issue - any savings i'd gained had been blown through by the time i got my job, however, my new salary allows me to re-grow that pot much quicker.  and also, i'm not planning on buying/ doing as much as i did last year, so it'll be 'cheaper' to live here, in a sense.

organizing and labeling my items is part of my 'home admin' list because i'm a strong proponent of 'everything has a place and everything in it's place'.  a lot of the stuff i was doing last year was geared toward getting everything a place to 'live'.  i'm not so invested in that this year, because as i said, i'm making a serious effort to save up for a house.  i'm still leaning to this house, although i've got a whole year to check out other houses in the area.  the long and short of it is - the only books that got unpacked this year are the textbooks, because i need to bring some of those puppies to work.  the ones i need have already been pulled and are waiting for the 4th, when i go back in for the new year.

i had a lot of mini-projects/ furniture projects to do in 2010 that didn't roll over to 2011, mainly because of the move into the new apartment.

Wood-working, Furniture, Etc
20102011

1) Buy over-the-toilet storage for downstairs bath

  a) paint silver/lavender/gray
  b) put together
  c) fill
2) Buy over the toilet storage for upstairs bath
  a) paint orange/rust/brown
  b) put together
  c) fill
3) Buy another leatherish ottoman for master bed
4) Buy silver-framed pic for downstairs bath
5) Buy gold-framed mirror for upstairs bath
6) Buy matching pict for upstairs bath.
7) Bed box thingies
12) New arrangement for guest bedroom
  a) Measure bed and wall to see if it can be moved
  b) Buy and put together $120 bookcase from target
  c) Buy and put together computer desk
  d) Buy steam trunk(s) for SCA clothes
  e) get rid of old bookcases, father's take-apart furniture
13) New furniture for Mstr Bdrm
  a) Bedside table
  b) Coffee Table for Altar
1) Finish that silly chair!
    a) make cushion
    b) make two matching wood sides
    c) staple fabric to chair top
    d) on bottom, use wooden-bead trim to finish

2) Take apart Dad's furniture
3) Possibly buy
    a) computer desk kit
    b) night-stand kit
    c) Desktop computer
    d) electric fireplace

so, i've nixed the toilet storage units, the pictures and mirror, bookcase, and the coffee table for the altar.  the last is because i'm not putting the bedroom altar back up, since i'm seriously planning on only being in this apt a year or less.  doesn't make any sense to get it out if i'm only going to put it back up again. (i know, bad pagan!) i did get rid of the old fold-up bookcases! but i still need to get rid of Dad's old furniture, and replace it.  right now, that's the computer desk and the night-stand.  the third table was the altar-table in the old apartment; i'm going to take the top of that one, find some kind of reminiscent-of-remington flat bronze sculpture to mount onto it, and hang it up as a major piece of art.

Item 1 on the 2011 list is also a project i've had in the works for *years* - since 2002, at least.  i finally figured out how i wanted to finish it, and ended up asking for (and getting!) a dremel tool to help with the wood-working part of that.

the electric fireplace is... ok, something i was just playing with, but the new apartment's heating is funky, which wouldn't matter if it was as warm a winter as normal down here!  my fingers don't like typing or stitching when they're stiff and cold.  i could have just gotten a space heater, but... look at this thing! :)

i had a section called 'health' in the 2009 To-Do List, and took it off for 2010.  it's back on for 2011:

Health
20102011
 1) Keep up the keeping up.
 2) Get enough sleep.
 3) Don't berate myself so much for being behind couples in their financial lives - i'm a singleton after all.

 5) Exercise at least 30min a week.
1) Swim during spring/summer/fall (frequency TBD)
2) Keep eye on weight, with goal of losing 1lb/week
3) Post-ankle, try to exercise 30min each week

i've decided to track the loss-of-weight in 2011 rather than the minutes of exercise as i did in 2010 - i think this will be a (mentally) healthier method for me.

regarding my ankle - for those in the know, i had a nasty trip-fall the week of Nov 22nd, and the monday i started work, the 29th, i'd tripped and fallen again.  two weeks later, after watching my ankle and foot swell up every day to 3x the normal size, i went in to a sports doc to make sure my toes would be ok and i didn't do major damage.  the verdict was soft tissue damage, which just took a longer time to heal.  he gave me a prescription-strength NSAID and a muscle-relaxer.  i've taken the muscle relaxer pill a grand total of... 3 times?  it knocks you out pretty good, but when the muscles are sore, it helps.  and once i managed to stay off it for a couple days barring trips to the throne room, the swelling went down nicely.  i've been able to baby it over the holidays, and it's responded nicely, so thanks doc!

i'm going to make a concerted effort to swim this year, and who cares who sees my beached-whale self?  take that, BMI!

and all the rest of the miscellaneous stuff on the 2011 list is actually leftover moving chores stuff, which i won't list again here.

because of the house, i'm thinking of buying some landscaping/ gardening/ house-planning software, so i can get mideval and anal on the new place's ass.  and also, i could plan for my dream home in detail.  and my retirement house.  and... the castle i've been drawing and re-drawing since i was 13 or so. ;)
and finally, the feel-good stuff.  i've pulled out 2 10-gal boxes of clothes to give to Good Will, and i'm not sure those clothes will be replaced any time soon.  yes, folks, my closet shrinketh.  i've also noticed i have 'work clothes', 'working in the garden clothes', and not much in between.  my friends tend to see me in my grubbies, and don't care, cause they're in their grubbies too.  oh, and i have 'romantic night' clothes, which is hysterically funny to me, since i never have any romantic nights with someone!

feel-good 2:  i paid for a military guy's breakfast the other day.  and also, made cookies for the firehouse down the street.  they haven't been delivered yet, because i've been doing 'moving chores', but they've been made and are waiting to go.

so, i need to find a military guy in the sandbox/ afghanistan to spoil.  this is my main charity, and i love doing it. :)

and that's why things are the way they are in 2011...
