hi, and thanks! :-D

regarding the anti-Weyr folks on Pern deliberately naming sons something hard to make an honorific: i don't recall any canon commentary on that, although there may have been some discussion of that nature on the relevant web-boards, which i don't pay much attention too. it would be a logical thing to do, though, a sign of cultural rebellion, of sorts. however, that reasoning doesn't prop up Jaxom's name - he was named and raised by Lytol, who is very much *pro*-dragon.

the reason given in DragonQuest for Jaxom not changing his name is that he wasn't in a place to become an 'official' dragonrider of the Weyr - he used maintaining his birth name as a signal to the other Lord Holders that he wasn't going to give up his responsibilities to 'play dragonrider'. he was the linchpin in an otherwise rather unstable political position as Lord Holder of Ruatha. if he'd repudiated his position, the succession wars would probably have been devestating. in addition, no one expected Ruth to live very long at first, so it wouldn't have made sense to repudiate the Lordship if Jaxom would have just had to go back there in 2-3 years. even as a grown dragon, Ruth was smaller than a green, meaning that he would have been difficult to integrate into the flying wings.

fanfiction.net has a section for Pern fanfic, but i have to say one of my favorite pieces is Dragon'sChoice, here:

and virtualpersonal is doing an SPN/Pern crossover in her LJ, DragonSpell, here:

(you may have to scroll down a bit, something isn't coming through on the formatting for me, but it's all there).

re your own story... AUGH, you're braver than i am! the only thing i can suggest in that instance to provide a naming chart, heh. 'Doyle is known as... ', etc. but i feel your pain, i really do.
