This is an interesting post - I can see that you've given a lot of thought to this and, as someone who is writing AU Jim and Blair in a pre-industrial-type setting myself, I can definitely appreciate the need to consider the complexity of naming conventions (my incarnations of James and Blair have retained their original names but there is a reason for that, which I won't go into here). Thanks for this thoughtful essay!
One small nitpick, if you don't mind *g*. The correct word, I believe, is 'Medieval' or (more usually here in the UK) 'Mediaeval', not 'Mideval'.
