my parents came in this weekend, and we did a little mini-thanksgiving, since i'm not going to make it up north for the big day this year.  it was a lot of fun - the turkey was stuffed with carrots, celery, onion, garlic, and some herb Mom picked up out of my cabinet.  we also had yams, which we sliced and sauteed with a trail mix of nuts, golden raisins, and dried cranberries; a cauliflower and broccoli mix into which mom put the rest of the onions and garlic; cornbread stuffing cooked in the neck-bone broth; and gravy made from the drippings.  yum, yum.  small downer on the dinner - i never remember to get a salt shaker for Dad: i don't put salt and pepper on my food, so it never occurs to me.  he had to make do with pouring it out of the morton's can into his hand.

only downer emotion-wise was when i told them i called the Employee Assistance Line, and had asked for help.  they still don't like psychologists and shrinks, but didn't discuss it too much, other than to ask if i was checking medication interactions and the like.  i am, presuming i can find a local psychiatrist - the EAP Lady is having trouble with that, so i may go to the psychologist and ask if they have someone they work with.  but other than that, they were very good, very supportive, and hugged a lot.  this is good, because my family isn't particularly demonstrative in general.  they're not un-emotional, but uncomfortable with their emotions?  but i got hugs, and it helped.

as much as i complain about them, they really are good people.  Mom even asked if there was something they should have done about the sacro-ilium tilt thing when i was a kid - but that's one of those things where you have to know what to look for to realize something's out of sync, and neither Mom nor i realized what was going on, so...

also managed to finish re-organizing the closets.  i am very pleased.  now i need to finish getting the backyard ready for fall planting, which i think i can do by/for this weekend.  the re-arrangement should help a lot.  i'm still thinking of raising my bed on those little stilt-things to give me more room under there.  i may go and build them myself, because the ones Mom and Dad had picked up were not very stable.

::hugs to all::

-bs, feeling momentarily better (but still going to a shrink soon, darnit!)

I never use salt when I cook, it's a habit I picked up from having a mom and some friends who have high blood pressure, and anyway I think using a lot of salt is a sign of a cook who doesn't know how to use things like garlic, herbs and spices properly.

i *only* use salt when i cook specific things like cookies or cake - i usually crockpot and rarely put salt in my stew, or pepper, either. i never put salt on the food on my plate, which is why Dad had no salt-shaker. Dad's habit is to put salt and pepper on all his veggies. meats usually get a bit of pepper, too.

Wow, that sounds really yummy! I kind of want to do some kind of Thanksgiving-like thing, since I'm going to be gone during Thanksgiving proper, but I'm not sure whether I'll have time. Maybe in December...

I do use salt, not a ton of it but some. For me it's a flavor enhancer, plus my blood pressure varies between "a bit low" and "whoa, are you sure you're okay?" low, so I view it as medicinal :)

right - i have the opposite blood pressure problem, plus for years i had IBS so bad i just stopped using *every* flavor enhancer - herbs, peppers, black pepper, onions, garlic... third, i used enough canned stuff i figure i get more than enough salt in my diet normally.

if you can talk your friends into it, a cool thing to do might be to have a potluck thanksgiving - host(ess) provides the turkey and/or kitchen space if needed. the guests either bring or cook/make a favorite dish of theirs - preferably one that's from their native culture, even if that culture is 'American Midwest Standard'. did that when i was at UC, and except for the fact that we cooked the turkey too long, it was pretty good, and a lot of fun.
