2017 appears to be starting off on the right foot at least.  I remember last year, I started by getting the flu that was going around - TWICE.  Things never quite picked up after that.

This year, I hope things are better, both in general and for personal health/ house health/ etc.

So, I'm not too late on round-up and to-do lists this year. I finally got around to setting up the office, and this figures into my 'done it' file. Poor Abbie (my dog) is sitting next to me wishing i was sitting on the couch, instead of said office...

Anyway, on to the listy!

and that's all she wrote today. my wrists have been getting pretty sore lately, probably carpal tunnel or arthritis, so the 2017 To-Done is going to have to wait for another day. Probably tomorrow, since I don't want to lose momentum. In Feb, at my normal check-up, I'm going to ask doc about my wrists, though...

I survived 2016, which turned out to be a shitty year for a lot of people. My hope for us all is that 2017 is much better. We need much better in our lives. And I'm not talking politics, I'm talking good jobs, good friends surviving, and good family of choice loving us. So 2017, take my advice: take off your pants, and slide on the ice!

I'm finally getting around to doing this post, which is one of only 2 posts I try to make certain I do.  The other post is, of course, the yearly round-up.  So it's with mild guilt that I realize I've not posted this until nearly Feb.

It's taken me longer than normal to do the goals post for 2015. The large part of this is that I've been sick. In fact, I'm sick again as I write this. However, this too, shall pass, and it's time to get busy.

The To-Do List is undergoing a lot of changes from the 2013 version, mostly based on lessons learned, and with a goal to keeping better track of all the things I *really* do, which don’t always get put on the list.  The better I know how much I actually do, the less I feel like a slacker when things on this list don’t get done.

ETA1: 22 Mar, first major update
boogieshoes: (Default)
So it’s mostly good news at Chez Boogs. Abbie and I had our vet appointments recently, and health ratings are up.

Abs gained 15 lbs, I lost 2 lbs from the last visit, for a total of 10 lbs weight loss – slow and steady wins the race. I also realized I lost two pants sizes, from size 24 (US) to 20 (also US). First time I’ve enjoyed shopping in a long time.

I have a heart rate of 78 BPM; Abbie’s is ‘hey, wait, I’m not finished taking your pulse yet!’.

My Blood Pressure is 123/81, Abbie’s is ‘yeah, whatever.’ (It’s so hard being a dog).

And I don’t have heart worms, and am up on my rabies, shots, and Abbie’s had her flu shots, so that’s all good, too.

I’ve been trying to focus on sticking a little better to my low-carb high-fat diet, and I can see and feel a difference.

so, just a general update as i go along, to keep people in the loop of my life.

the awesome: I have green things in my garden!  it's pretty cool.  as much as i tend to be unable to keep things *alive* once they've sprouted, it's always fun to watch those seedling sprout and grow.

the good: i'm going to gulf wars (SCA event), and the tent should be fine, and i'm building a bed 'kit' so i don't sleep on the ground.  i'm excited, and it's going to be fun!

the bad:  some of the roofing shingles are coming loose, and i need to get that repaired.  total cost: $130 for shingles and labor.  not so bad.

the ugly:  when the roofer came out, he told me i'd have to replace my entire roof in 6mos to a year - this is a wear and tear issue aggravated in part by the fact that there's no wind or sun blocks whatsoever out here.  now, the no trees thing is in part because there's a big advantage to having nothing around to fall into your house should a hurricane come by.  otoh, hurricane...  guesstimate - because the roofer hadn't measured the roof yet, and you can't pin down the price of shingles until you order them - is $6-7000.  I'll have to put that off a few months until i can save up for it.  i'll be getting a 'standard 20-yr roof', which as the roofer said, should last 10-15 years in Mobile.  yay local weather.  i could pay a premium for higher-grade shingles, but those will wear out earlier than they're 'supposed' to, as well.  ah, well.

at least i have a goal to save up for.  and GW after this year should be much less expensive than last year.

So I think I will end up rolling over most of the 2013 list straight to the 2014 list.  Part of that is the result of unexpected trips to Germany and Lenexa for work, and part of that is that I under-estimated how much stuff I could do on the house, regarding energy levels and actual monetary levels.

the shower-head in the masterbath pulled out of the wall yesterday, and i found out the master bathroom toiler was... not performing well.  and it's been raining like a tropical storm the past day and a half or so, so i've been terrified my house is going to have ISSUES.

*clings to her internets for comfort*

that's right, borax, which is sort of like baking soda, vinegar, and bleach - one of those things that's been around forever, the active ingredient in a hell of a lot of stuff, and rather ecologically sound.  Lowe's didn't have it, Target didn't have it, and I almost gave up at Wal-mart.... amazing how different the box looks when they change the packaging.

so with the wal-mart run tonight, i've got the stuff to mop the cement floor, which i will do after a quick vaccuum over the crack in the slab.  then, it's fill the crack with joint compound, do the ceiling while that dries (it'll take a day), touch-up paint the walls, and then paint the floor with a cement-sealer.  *then* i can go buy carpet.  which will be laid down properly, thank you. ;)

in fannish news, i'm progressing well on my mag7 doggies stitching.  i'm on Buck, the german shepherd dog.  i'm having a bit of a debate with myself, and would appreciate the commentary of my fellow fans - Buck doesn't seem to have a 'signature' bandana like Vin does.  in the pilot, he wears a pink one, in One Day Out West, he wears a dark blue one, and in the Collector (which I'm watching as I write this, hah - and Vin is wearing a *brown* bandana!), he's wearing a dark red/ maroon bandana.  the cross-stitch key has the Buck-dog's bandana as dark grey/black (because of the tones used in the piece, it actually 'reads' black).

i'm planning to change the bandana's color, but i'm not sure what color i should pick.  anyone have any suggestions?

also, if anyone knows more about pic-manipulation and can zero in on the bandana in this picture, it'd probably help people to see exactly what i'm talking about.

so... upon talking to everybody and ghod down here, it turns out that cracks in a slab foundation is just something that happens in the area.  we've got sandy clay soil and a water table 6' under grade, and rain out the wazoo, and most slabs wind up with cracks within about 2 months of being poured.  as long as it isn't doing the broken off/ tilting at an angle thing - and mine isn't - it's usually ok.

the second part of that was getting the concrete guys in to do their thing.  which they did this afternoon in about 30 minutes.  so now it's joint compound on the crack of some sort, put a water sealer on the cement, and continue.

'continuing' is: re-glaze the ceiling, paint the last two pieces of trim, touch up the blue paint, yellow in the closet, trim paint, put down carpet padding, and carpet.  should not actually take too long, though i'm not sure i'm going to get to it this weekend.  my feet and ankles and a lot of my other major joints have been sore, probably because of the cold.  this weekend might end in a lot of stitching and couch-surfing, which is a-ok with me.

i ended up taking the mag7 doggies with me to work last week, and i'm using it as my 'work project'.  i love this pattern because it stitches up so quickly.  i only just started on the Buck-dog, and i can already see the shapes of his legs and chest.  i manage to do about 2 9" strands to floss a day, maybe a little more.  this wednesday, i went to Micheal's and color matched the kit floss with the DMC selection there.  i didn't get a perfect match on every color - not even most colors - probably because i don't think they had all 425 shades or whatever.  but i got them close enough that when i run out of thread, i can replace with the new thread i brought and just keep going... 7 more times.  (once for me, once for each of the members of the cast.  i hope.)

i'm hoping i can finish this thing, and get it mounted in a shadowbox and the box all tricked out and finished too, before the Mag7 Con in August.  it would be nice to present my first time through the pattern then.  but i'm not even sure i'm going to be able to go to the con - it just depends on the money situation.  *sigh*

all in all, though, doing well.

2012 To-Do List

A few comments on 2012 from personal memories:

2012 was dominated by achievement of HOUSE, which is awesome in several ways.

well, the good news is that i have a line on a foundation repair company that gives free estimates.  i'll wait till i'm back to work to call them.  my real estate agent recommended them, and also that the termite guy come out and spray the room because the crack might become an access point.  definitely doing that, because it's a good idea.

i have just the glaze on that ceiling to go, and i'm - hopefully - gonna do it tonight, but i'm wondering if i should go ahead and do the trim.  if the cement has to be repaired, instead of just patched, will i need to redo all the trim, or just touch up?  questions, questions.

the yellow in the closet in the room is done except for touch-up, though, and that's good.

boogieshoes: (Default)
i don't remember this when i pulled the carpet up, but there's a huge crack in the cement slab in the office, across the far corner of the house.  it looks level with the rest of the floor, but the crack itself is pretty damned wide.  oi.

boogieshoes: (cleaning)
well, my goal this Christmas week is to get the office ceiling and trim painted, and the carpet replaced.  I also want to work on the kitchen trim and that little hallway's trim on that side of the house.  i have 1 coat on the ceiling, and the carpet up.

i don't think carpet ripping is supposed to be a two-day job, tho...  but at least i now know how to do it:  take the sill plate/ finishing plate off the doorway, so i have a place to start.  rip up all around the edges and into the closet.  cut at the closet doorway, and in half down the room.  roll up, take to garage until garbage day.  take the underpad out, which is fortunately a) much lighter and b) just taped together.

TAKE A SHOWER!  oh dear god, that was nasty.

i also decided to dig out the dust masks for today - the picture on them has a guy using a fine-grit circular sander.  but i feel *much* better after wrestling with the carpet today than i did yesterday.

now i need to find some saran wrap and tape it to the cement slab.  they didn't put any kind of vapor barrier under the carpet, and as bad as it smelled, i rather suspect the padding and carpet were wicking up moisture like no one's business.  we certainly have enough of it around here.

boogieshoes: (fresian)
well, this weekend will be spent stencilling that one bedroom.  sometime soon, i've got pics to upload regarding the new colors in the house.  the emerald green living room with the chocolate brown trim looks awesome, by the way. :)

i was hoping to get to the ceiling in the office, but i suspect the stencilling will take all weekend.  the thing is, the stone grout line sheet is pretty large to handle all by yourself.  and you kinda need to wait between moving the thing around for the paint to dry enough that it won't smear.  and that's with dabbing it on carefully, and blotting the brush often...

but it'll look completely awesome when it's done. :)

boogieshoes: (Default)
back online, and almost out of the apt - just the entertainment center left and that's being picked up by Goodwill tomorrow - i hope.  if nothing goes wrong.

the parental units are also coming in tomorrow afternoon, so i had to buy them bedding to sleep on... because i have no idea where the extra bedding is.  i also went in for 'window wear on the cheap', because i've got 5 windows in various bedrooms (and another 3 in the living rooms) that are large and clear - and at some point i'd like some privacy, even though the neighbors aren't physically close.

i hope everyone's ok, and no disasters have happened, personally or professionally, for anyone.

*hugs her flist*

so i don't post terribly much anyway, but i wanted to warn people i would be offline at home between Oct 12th (this friday) and Oct 24th.  i wasn't thinking, and did this to myself  - my household move date is this friday, while i scheduled the cable guys to come out and turn on tv and internet Oct 24th.  because i can't read a calendar. -.-

i need to download some pics pretty soon - the base coats are almost all done. almost, because i just completely ran out of energy before i finished the blue room.  i only have a little bit left, but i just couldn't complete it.  my back and hip are aching, my hands are aching, feet throbbing, i wanted to sleep.... so i came back to the apt and sacked out on the couch. but i'm still pleased with where i'm at this weekend.  tomorrow is a planned light day - finish the blue room, finish the first coat of stone treatment, do some corner grout lines in the MBR.  when i come back I need to pick up a couple 10-gal boxes from walmart so i can finish packing up my dvds.  i don't pre-pack a lot, but i do a little bit here and there.  also need to remember to pack the foodz to go over. :-p
